The Washington Education Foundation is an independent non-profit community foundation re-established in 2002. The Foundation works to enhance the educational programs of the Washington Elementary School District by:
- Developing a mutually supportive relationship with community and educators.
- Enhancing the educational programs in the schools with supplemental financial resources.
- Generating resources and investments to support quality education.
The Foundation is committed to the creation of partnerships with schools. We welcome the support and involvement of individuals and groups to help today and prepare for tomorrow.
We appreciate past contributions and look forward to new partnerships that will help us increase opportunities to enhance our children's education.
We need your assistance to help students, teachers, and our schools be successful.
Thank You.

Jill Daoust & Sherry Phillips - Tumbleweed Elementary Children's Books: The books enhanced a guided reading program for 2nd and 3rd grade students. Our students' reading level improved and we noticed improvement in word recognition, oral reading, and comprehension. Love of reading also increased. We will continue our program next year and, hopefully, expand our library. We're also planning to add art and written language activities to coincide with the stories in the purchased books.
Annette Winfield - Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Let's Communicate: The grant was used to purchase materials and supplies for the sign language group activities. It also paid for a field trip to the Phoenix Day School for the Deaf. The students benefited by learning a second language (American Sign Language) and they had the opportunity to meet and communicate with deaf peers.
Anita Kratzer - Ocotillo Elementary Preschool Wizards: We are very excited to report that our preschoolers love using the new computer software and Intellikeys keyboard. The keyboard is a larger version keyboard for children with less than accurate fine motor skills to functionally access computer activities. Both the software and keyboard allow all of the children to navigate and choose different language-based activities. One example of the program allows students to listen to a story while they follow along with the pictures (symbols & words) on the monitor. It also enables staff to print out the pages to make an adaptable book for all pre-reading/reading levels. Because of this mini grant, some of our preschoolers are verbalizing words from the educational activities and are retelling stories heard and/or seen on this new software. Watching our 'eager-to-learn preschoolers' use the materials bought from the grant has re-energized our staff because it provides an additional way to teach. We are so glad that we were awarded this grant because this new software and hardware will be beneficial for many students for many years to come
Joan Jones - Third Grade Teacher - Shaw Butte In all my years of teaching this is one of the most beneficial things that has happened to me. For once, I didn't have to pay for a classroom project that would benefit my students out of my own pocket.
Bill Adams - WESD Governing Board Member I want to offer a quick thank you for all the hard work you and everyone associated with this past weekend's Washington Education Foundation Golf Tournament invested. It was a great time and I truly enjoyed the day. I am so impressed with your organization and hope that I can be of service some day. Again many, many thanks for inviting me and for all you and the Washington Education Foundation do for our children.
Maryjane Adams - Road Runner Elementary Work Incentive Program: I used the grant to purchase merchandise for the students to buy with their 'allowance' related to their income bracket for each grading period. The students reaped the rewards of their efforts;they earned a 'paycheck' biweekly corresponding to the average percentage earned for each subject. The students appreciated the comparison of their parents work on their jobs to their own responsibilities at school.
Steve Smith - Washington Elementary Fourth Grade Classroom Libraries: Three 4th grade classrooms were graciously awarded $500 each to establish classroom libraries. The students used them on a regular basis and critiqued them using the Book Review forms developed by the teachers. At the end of the year, some of the Book Reviews were posted in the cafeteria under 'Summer Reading Hits' so that other students might read those reviews and decide to read some of the books themselves.
Sharon Coatney and Joan Jones - 3rd grade teachers, Shaw Butte Read-At-Home: The grant was used to purchase recorded books on tape, blank tapes, recorders and earphones. Our students checked out the books and equipment, took them home and then, after listening and reading along with the story on tape, they recorded themselves reading the stories. Parents and siblings listened with them and had the opportunity to participate with the suggested follow-up activities included with the packet.
Nina Mikulich - Lookout Mountain Dear WEF Committee,
I just wanted to say thank you so much for the grant to start my "Take
Home Reading" Program. I am looking forward to selecting the books during
the summer so they will be ready for the children next year. I really
appreciate that you are providing the grants and that it is fairly simple
to apply. It is also very nice to receive the money and be able to
purchase the materials. Thank you again for providing these grants!
Michelle Rippe - 2nd grade teacher Asian Cultural Unit: My students gained a better understanding and respect of cultural differences. One student said, 'I wish I were Japanese so I could make kites all the time.'
Lynn Smith - Music / General Teacher Pioneer Life: I taught this class after school during the fall and winter, as well as spring intersession. I had students ask for the class over and over again. They learned games that take little or no equipment, so they could play them at home with their friends. The students also worked at Pioneer Living History Museum, which gave them a sense of how hard life was back then and a sense of pride in what they had accomplished. This enriched the social studies curriculum.
Mindy Whalen - Shaw Butte Elementary Math Madness: I purchased math games to align with district curriculum. I feel the games allowed me to systematically review previously taught math skills. I will continue with Math Madness next year!
Sharon Coatney - Third Grade Teacher - Shaw Butte The grant application was very teacher friendly and I was so pleased to find a way to motivate my students to read while involving families in the process. Thank you W.E.F.
Joan Brignolo - Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Thank you very much for the mini grant celebrating Cultural Diversity at Cactus Wren. I will use the money wisely and to fulfill my students' goals of awareness of differences.
Stephanie Daale - Mountain View Elementary Thank you so much for the grant you gave me to purchase tile math! I can't wait to use it with my new class!
Shelley Levine - 7th Grade Reading Teacher Classroom Library: The students became very involved in the series that was purchased, (low reading level, high interest books for reluctant and English learner readers), and were very excited when new books came in. They began to enjoy the reading process. |
